I too abhor iPhoto for the same reasons you detailed above--every other aspect of using a Mac is great--but I'm left with no choice in the absence of similar photo manager applications on OS X. I suspect there's something going on behind the scenes here--iPhoto and Picasa fill roles that are a little too overlapping for me not to think there's a bit of collusion here.
